ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING INFORMATION

This collection was acquired by the Washington State University (WSU) Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) during 1994-1995. The collection consists of 154 photographic negatives and 77 photographic prints. Initial processing of the collection is unclear, but they were placed in labeled folders at that time. The collection was redescribed in 2011 by graduate History student Nathan Sowry, and items were then left in the existing order.

BIOGRAPHICAL & ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The photographer, Harry Eston Maris, had a photographic studio located at 320 W 1st Ave in Toppenish, WA. Maris was born in 1881, and passed away at age 36 in 1918 in Toppenish due to a liver illness.

The Toppenish Roundup and Rodeo depicted in this collection took place in Toppenish, Yakima County, Washington state over September 3, 4, 5, and 6 in 1914. Attendance over the four-day event exceeded 10,000 people, with over 200 local Native Americans taking part and temporarily staying in an Indian village erected at the site. Numbering among the many participants at the Roundup and Rodeo were the entertainer Sean Nadrean the Yiddish Clown and his mule Jarbo. A few of the many events included the cowboy half-mile race and stage coach race, fancy-riding, roping, and bucking contests, and an Indian dance and ceremony. The final day of the Roundup and Rodeo concluded with a parade through the streets of the city of Toppenish, complete with exotic animals such as elephants, lions, and zebras.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION & ARRANGEMENT

These images document the audience, participants, and events from the 1914 Toppenish Roundup and Rodeo. The images in this collection explore the diversity of life in central Washington state in the early part of the twentieth-century, with participants and audience members traveling from various parts of the Western United States and Pacific Northwest for the annual event.

The collection is ordered in two parallel series. Box 2 contains 154 negatives, generally clustered by subject in folders, though the subjects do not appear to be in any sort of order. Box 1 contains 77 photographic prints, and all prints appear to have corresponding negatives in the identically numbered folders in Box 2. As there are more negatives than there are prints, some folders in Box 1 may appear to be missing, but this simply indicates there are no prints that match that Box 2 folder number. Folder 53, located at the back of Box 1, consists of a few pages of photocopied historical documents relevant to the Fair and to the acquisition of the collection.

Original folder labeling is recorded below; some was taken directly from the images, and some added during the original processing. One necessary clarification: the images labeled Chief Moses are not of the better known Chief of that name; that more renowned Chief Moses died in 1899, 15 years before these photographs. It is unclear who the Chief Moses in these photographs is.

The majority of the significant images from this collection have been digitized and can be found online in the 1914 Toppenish Roundup and Rodeo Photographs Digital Collection.
