Biography/History
Paul Philemon Kies was born at Highland, Illinois, in 1891. In 1915 he received a Master of Arts degree in German from the University of Nebraska and a degree in music from Lincoln Musical College. After teaching high school at Goodland, Kansas, Kies accepted a pastorate in Illinois for two years. He graduated from the Chicago Musical College in 1920, and taught English at Penn College in Iowa until 1924. He then accepted a teaching position at the State College of Washington in Pullman, Washington. In 1928 he received a doctorate in English from the University of Chicago. Kies worked at the State College of Washington until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1956. He died at Pullman in 1971.
Scope and Content
Series 1 makes up the majority of the collection consists of approximately 20,000 35mm color transparencies covering many facets of Washington State University including: sports, drama, music, visiting lecturers and artists, building construction, faculty and administrative personnel, international students, commencement exercises, student activities of various kinds, vegetation on campus, and the like. The collection also includes many photographs of the Pullman community and the surrounding area. Additionally, there are slides taken outside the Pullman area on trips to various parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Included at the end of these, but outside of this system, are: slides taken by others, slides of Paul Kies, slides of Kies' relatives, and a set of slides taken in Switzerland of the Krattli Family, relatives of Paul Kies.
Series 2 is approximately 400 black and white prints of WSU and Pullman related people and events.
Series 3 is 113 2-1/4 color transparencies taken from 1955-1959. These are mostly of the Lewiston Roundup with a few of the WSU campus.
Series 4 is 15 rolls of 35mm black and white film negatives, circa 1950.
Series 5 is 22 2-1/4 black and white negatives including Paul Kies and campus scenes, including the excavation of former TUB site, circa the early 1950's.
Under each entry in the container list is a brief description of the contents and an inventory number. For more detailed identification of the slides, refer to the lists written by Paul Kies which make up Series 6. These are filed using the same sequential system as the slides. Following the date entry for each group is the number of items in the group in parentheses.
Arrangement
The slides in Series 1 are arranged chronologically according to Kies own system which, initially, consisted of assigning each box of slides a letter and a sequential number. Thus, at the start of the collection in 1950, the boxes of slides are numbered A-1 to A-29. Thereafter the letter changes and a new sequence from 1 to 20 is established. This was continued until the system reached K-13 which marked the end of 1955. During 1956 the boxes of slides were assigned the number of the year in which they were, taken and a second number signifying the sequence within that year. Thus, in 1956 the slides are numbered 56-1 to 56-25. The following year he combined these systems and adopted a program which he maintained until his death. This new system used upper case letters for the sequential order within each year such as 57A, 57B, 57C and so on. Following 57Z, he continued with 57Aa, 57Ba, 57Bb, etc.
Series 2 is arranged chronologically using Kies' sequential numbering system, except for 13 prints of Paul Kies and 9 miscellaneous prints included at the end.
Series 3 is arranged chronologically.

Separated Material
Certain slides and prints have been eliminated from the collections according to well-defined criteria. Technical considerations such as badly overexposed or underexposed images, half exposed frames or out of focus images were cause to eliminate an image, provided the content or subject matter was insignificant or not identified. In the case of multiple shots of the same subject or of subjects of minor content, only a small sample was retained. Approximately ten percent of the collection was withdrawn as a result of this selection policy.
